Summer’s here, and the mercury will be rising more and more very soon. As you prepare to head out and enjoy all of the great summertime activities that St. Louis has to offer, it’s important to remember to take care of your skin. Here are 7 great tips to help you protect your skin throughout the entire season:
Exfoliate First – Exfoliation removes dead skin cells and clears your face, giving you smoother, more hydrated skin. Do this first thing in the morning before applying other products like toner, moisturizers, sunscreen, and make-up. After you exfoliate, seal in the moisture with a hydrating body cream, particularly one with an SPF!
Drink More Water – Higher temperatures and more time spent outside will lead to some dehydration, which you might notice if you feel dizzy, light-headed, or develop a headache. Drink plenty of water – we’re talking at least eight 8-ounce glasses of plain, filtered water to help detoxify and hydrate your body.
Stay out of the Midday Sun – It’s best to avoid being out in the sun between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. when the sun’s rays are at their strongest. If you need to be outside between these hours, put on plenty of sunscreen every few hours and take shelter under a tree or umbrella. Don’t forget to wear light, protective clothing to keep you cool as well!
Apply (and Reapply) Sunscreen – Of course, if you’re headed outside, you should apply sunscreen. Remember to reapply it every two hours to protect yourself from sunburns throughout the day. Choose a sunscreen with a strong SPF and a formula that matches your specific skin makeup such as a chemical-free formula for sensitive skin or an extra emollient formula for dry skin.
Care for Over-Exposed Skin – If you went outside without sunscreen on, chances are that you might have received some sun damage. Although the damage is already done, you can soothe your burns with cooling gels and botanicals, which can help prevent peeling and reduce inflammation and redness. Just apply these gels on any pink skin, and you should see a difference. We highly recommend aloe vera!
Don’t Forget About Your Eyes! Yes, your eyes need proper protection, too! Wear sunglasses that have UVA and UVB protection to help prevent any damage to the sensitive skin around your eyes. These types of sunglasses can also help prevent cataracts!
Protect Your Head, Too – The summer sun can burn your scalp, ears, face, and neck as well! Wearing a wide-brimmed hat can protect the majority of these parts. Baseball caps will work fine, too – just don’t forget to put sunscreen on your ears and neck!
